COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Course Description - Italian Beginner I

This is an introductory course for students with little or no previous background in the Italian language.  It will focus on Travel to Italy for Beginners.

The goal is to obtain a level of comfort and proficiency in the understanding, speaking, reading and writing using basic grammar and vocabulary. All students will be given numerous opportunities to repeat, answer, ask, read and write in Italian. Methodologies used will respond to the students’ varied learning styles.

Lessons will incorporate the vocabulary, grammar, reading material and dialogues of chapters from the required text.

To enhance the students’ comprehension, homework will be assigned each week. Tests and quizzes may be given at the discretion of the instructor. There will be no grades given.

Course Description - Italian Beginner II

This is a course for students looking to build on the fundamentals of Italian that they learned in Beginner I. Weekly lessons in Beginner II will focus on proper pronunciation and cadence while addressing the vocabulary, grammar and dialogues. All students are encouraged to participate orally in each class. This oral participation includes repetition, responding to homework questions, and conversing – in Italian! – with other members of the class.

While it is important to memorize vocabulary, verb forms and grammar, the goal of this class is to foster communication. Whether preparing for an upcoming trip or hoping to order in their favorite Italian restaurant closer to home, students will have fun while learning to hold conversations in Italian!

To enhance the students’ comprehension, homework will be assigned each week.

In addition to the work in the textbook, students will read a short story.  Students will be asked to write a few original sentences to practice each chapter’s salient points. It is so rewarding to learn how to piece together the grammar and expressions in order to share our thoughts.

It is recommended that students acquire an English-Italian dictionary. Tests and quizzes may be given at the discretion of the instructor. There will be no grades given.

Course Description - Intermediate Italian

This course is for those students who have mastered the material presented in Beginner II and wish to bring their proficiency to the next level. Emphasis is on the oral and grammar exercises for the purpose of enriching one’s spoken and written language. Students will maintain more detailed discussions, presentations and dialogues using clear pronunciation and correct intonation.

In addition to the work in the textbook, supplemental reading and writing assignments will be provided.

To enhance the students’ comprehension, homework will be assigned each week. Tests and quizzes may be given at the discretion of the instructor. There will be no grades given.
